Retail Ergonomics

This service, within the Retail Forensics® category of services, is for evaluating the physical and perceptual fit between consumer behavior and the design of the retail environment. Most retail spaces have at least a few areas within them that don't meet the physical and perceptual needs or expectations of customers. As a result, customer satisfaction drops and sales suffer.

We observe the behaviors of many individual shoppers as they interact with various elements of the space in question. Then we analyze the collective data and make detailed assessments of what is adding value to your environment, and what isn't:

  • Do product displays crowd one another and force customers to wait to examine products or be uncomfortably close to strangers? (Shoppers do not like to be brushed or bumped while browsing.)
  • Are you "overlighting" your store? (This is both costly to operate and an inferior way to capture attention or arouse the emotions of shoppers.)
  • Is your P.O.P. signage legible? (You would be shocked at the number of terrific messages we've seen masked by illegible fonts and color schemes!)

All these types of "exposures" are what comprise a customer's total retail experience with your store or brand. When your customers feel they are not adequately cared for they won't usually complain or tell you what's wrong. They simply avoid your store or your brand. That's bad. You lose sales and don't have any idea why. We inform you about who is and isn't not making purchases in your store, and why so you can change the behavior of your store and thus, your customer.

To merely exist in this age of retailing, you cannot afford to miss on any of your customers' expectations, and today customers expect a lot. To excel in today's retail environment, you must exceed the customer's expectations. Only the best are remembered. Most of the rest are seen as "pretty good" and then forgotten in the vast void of mediocrity.

We analyze the empirical data within the context of our proprietary database and generate actionable insight on how to improve the physical relationship between your retail space and your customers. Using the insight we provide, our clients are better able to create environments for selling that is more user-friendly and memorable for your customers, and more profitable for you.
